On 14 June 2017, a fire broke out in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower block of flats in North Kensington. it caused 72 deaths, more than 70 were injured and 223 people escaped. It was  the worst UK residential fire since the Second World War.

The Tavistock and Portman’s Trauma Unit provided support to a number of front-line services after the fire.

Since Caroline Garland’s retirement in 2008, Dr Jo Stubley had taken over the leadership of the Trauma Unit. The Unit broadened its scope and developed expertise in addressing complex and developmental trauma, working with asylum seekers and refugees, veterans and survivors of childhood abuse.
