The Gender Identity Development Unit was founded in 1989 at the Department of Child Psychiatry at St Georges Hospital St George’s by Domenico Di Ceglie, of the Tavistock’s Adolescent Department, to offer support to young people experiencing distress about their gender identity. In 1994, GIDS moved to the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, initially taking up residence in the Portman Clinic. From 2009 the service has been nationally commissioned by NHS England and has hence grown in size and importance within the Trust. It remains a unique service in the UK and is a pioneering and respected service internationally.
